Jackson Green Named AGR Boys Basketball Player of the Year
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle named Penfield High School student-athlete Jackson Green as the Boys Basketball Player of the Year in its annual winter sports All-Greater Rochester Teams. Head Coach Jason Ellis was named Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
All-Greater Rochester Teams are selected by Section V coaches with input from Democrat and Chronicle staff.
The accolades follow a historic season for the team, who clinched the Monroe County League Championship and Sportsmanship Award. In March, the team advanced through Section V tournament play, winning its second consecutive AA1 title with a convincing 70-50 win over Victor. Green was named Tournament MVP, and was selected to the All-Tournament team alongside CJ Johnson and Jake McCarthy; Coach Jason Ellis was named Coach of the Year.
Their path to the state championship began with a regional qualifier against Pittsford Mendon, with the team winning 63-48. Penfield went on to defeat North Tonawanda 62-49 to win the Class AA Far West Regional Championship, then outlasted Seton Catholic in overtime to make it to the championship game.
On Saturday, March 21, the team cemented its legacy when it won the first New York State Championship in program history. Penfield beat Amsterdam (Section II/Albany) 62-54, in the Class AA tournament final and Green was named MVP of the Class AA state tournament, as well.
