Athletics Collaboration Strengthens Minds, Builds Champions
Penfield Athletics is fortunate to have built a strong and positive partnership with Dr. Craig Cypher, Clinical and Sport Psychologist with UR Medicine Orthopaedics and Physical Performance.
“Dr. Cypher’s expertise in sports psychology has been an incredible resource for our athletes and teams, helping them develop mental skills that complement their physical training,” said Marybeth Walker, Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics. “His guidance has empowered our athletes to set meaningful goals, remain resilient in the face of challenges, and perform at their best both on and off the field.”
This fall, Cypher has been working with athletes and teams on research-based goal setting. Rather than simply setting goals, they are also preparing for adversity along the way.
“One powerful approach we’ve introduced is WOOP, developed by psychologist Gabrielle Oettingen,” Cypher explained. “This method helps athletes not only dream big but also anticipate and navigate challenges effectively.”
WOOP breaks goal setting into four steps:
1. WISH – Define your goal.
2. OUTCOME – Visualize what success looks like.
3. OBSTACLE – Identify internal and external challenges that could stand in your way.
4. PLAN – Create “If-Then” strategies to overcome those obstacles. (Example: If [obstacle] happens, then I will [action].)
Cypher added that it’s been inspiring to support so many teams and athletes this fall in reaching their goals and overcoming obstacles.
Penfield Athletics will continue working with Cypher to help athletes develop the mental resilience and focus that lead to success both on and off the field
